BFF

A scene from one of my favorite movies, Little Miss Sunshine, goes like this:

Dwayne: I wish I could just sleep until I was eighteen and skip all this crap-high school and everything-just skip it.
Frank: Do you know who Marcel Proust is?
Dwayne: He’s the guy you teach.
Frank: Yeah. French writer. Total loser. Never had a real job. Unrequited love affairs. Gay. Spent 20 years writing a book almost no one reads. But he’s also probably the greatest writer since Shakespeare. Anyway, he uh… he gets down to the end of his life, and he looks back and decides that all those years he suffered, Those were the best years of his life, ’cause they made him who he was. All those years he was happy? You know, total waste. Didn’t learn a thing. So, if you sleep until you’re 18… Ah, think of the suffering you’re gonna miss. I mean high school? High school-those are your prime suffering years. You don’t get better suffering than that

True dat.  Seriously, do you know a single person who doesn’t look back on their high school days without a story or two of regret or remorse?  No doubt about it, those years can be hellacious, no matter how privileged, popular, or carefree you may be.  I look at the person I was then and the person and I am now, and there are very few similarities anymore (which is a good thing for the most part).  My adolescence tossed me around like a big block of clay and molded me into someone I like so much more.  Without a piece of shit boyfriend and other various bad choices along the way, I wouldn’t have gained nearly as much.  Lucky for me, I also walked away from the hallowed halls of Campbell High School with much more than just hard earned life lessons–three of my truest friends and eventually, a rockin’ husband.

Two of these women traveled from Boston and San Francisco to attend Mama’s funeral.  Tell me that isn’t a devoted friend.  Fortunately we don’t always meet under such horrific circumstances. We unite each year for a weekend of reminiscing and laughing until we can’t breath with the occasional squabble even mixed in sometimes. This year’s festivities were in Atlanta to celebrate Jen’s new home and the upcoming arrival of new baby Loughney.

If the four of us were to meet as strangers on a playground with our kids today, I’m not sure the dynamic would work quite as well. We are about as different as the four seasons but our shared history unites us and keeps the fire burning strong.  An extension of sisterhood really, they know me that well–lifetime members of my “inner circle.”  I continue to learn from and love them dearly.  The strengths they had two and a half decades ago are still the qualities I admire today:  To roll with the punches, juggling curve balls life throws with a wry sense of humor and the belief that it will all work out as it should, to wake up and smell the roses of life, accepting that those roses have thorns but loving them anyway, and to live life with clarity, determination, and poise, discovering sometimes the greatest joys of life can be the result of what were presumed mistakes.
Here’s to 25 more years of stories, love, and friendship, Jen, Dawn, and Julie 🙂

Love this. And all four of you are hottie hot hots! 🙂 I like the idea that suffering and hard times help mold us into better people…makes high school seem a wee bit better, haha!
