Twice, I’ve used my blog as a platform for awareness on topics near and dear to my heart: Adoption and Shining Rock Classical Academy (the public charter school I helped start). For both of these causes, Larry and I created fundraisers and were met with a generosity that still blows me away. I feel it’s important to always have a place to recognize our donors, and that’s what this page is all about.
Donors for Common River and Ethiopian Orphanage
Common River is US-based nonprofit implementing a community development program in an Ethiopian town called Aleta Wondo. Their mission is to “empower the community to become balanced, productive and self-sustaining for others to witness and replicate, while honoring cultural heritage and environmental biodiversity.” Aleta Wondo is relatively close to the town where Wogene was born and where his family still lives. We had heard amazing things about Common River before our trips to Ethiopia, so we made the effort to visit them and bring supplies they needed. When we reached out to family and friends to help fund not only this effort but to also help us bring Wogene’s orphanage things like diapers, formula, etc., we were humbled by their kindness and generosity. Our Donors for “1500K for SRCA”
In 2015, we helped open a public charter school in our hometown, Shining Rock Classical Academy. In an effort to raise money to jumpstart our outdoor experiential programming, which was one of the most important facets of our school, Larry, the kids and I raised nearly $25,000 by hiking 1500 kilometers collectively over the year. Our friends, family, and even complete strangers were incredibly generous to this worthy cause.
